Privacy

This is a small reference site about manga editions. It runs no analytics, no advertising scripts and no tracking of any kind. It has no accounts, no mailing list and no sign-up form. The only way it learns anything about you is if you choose to write to us.

The short version

If you never write to us, we never learn anything about you. There is nothing to sign up for. Nothing on this site watches you read it.

If you use the request form

The request form is a Google Form. It asks which manga you would like a guide for, and lets you add a note. It does not ask for your name, your email address or anything else, and it does not require you to sign in. We receive only what you type.

Because it is a Google Form, Google handles the submission and stores the answers for us. If you are signed in to a Google account, Google shows your own address above the first question; that line comes from Google, and the address is not passed to us. Please do not type an email address or any other personal detail into the boxes — we cannot reply, and we would rather not hold it.

When you simply read the site

The pages are hosted on GitHub Pages. As with any web host, GitHub's servers necessarily receive your IP address and the address of the page you asked for in order to send it back. Those server logs belong to GitHub; we cannot see them and never have.

This site sets no cookies of its own, and the guide pages contain no JavaScript at all — not ours, not anyone's. There is no analytics package, no visitor counter, no heatmap, no advertising pixel and no social widget anywhere on the site. There is no third-party code of any kind.

The links to bookshops

Every "buy" link on a guide page is an affiliate link to Rakuten Books in Japan. Clicking one sends you through Rakuten's redirect at hb.afl.rakuten.co.jp, which sets a cookie in your browser so that Rakuten can tell them the sale came from here. If you then buy the book, this site earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. That commission is how the site pays for itself.

We do not receive your name, your address or your payment details — only a count of how many purchases were attributed. What Rakuten does with the visit is governed by Rakuten's own privacy policy, not ours. If you'd rather not be tracked that way, search for the ISBN directly instead of following the link; every ISBN is printed on the page for exactly that reason.

If you email us

Mail sent to an address at editioncompass.com is relayed by ImprovMX, a forwarding service, and delivered into a Gmail mailbox. So an email you send passes through ImprovMX and Google as well as reaching us. ImprovMX keeps a delivery log for seven days; the message itself stays in the mailbox until we delete it.

How long things are kept

• Answers sent through the request form are kept until the guide is written, or until we decide not to write it.
• Email you send us is kept in the mailbox until we no longer need it.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or stop using it. If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, that is a right under the UK GDPR and the GDPR: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and portability.

We have no mailing list and no accounts, so for most visitors there is nothing to ask about. If you have written to us, our basis for keeping that email is our legitimate interest in answering you.

You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority. We would rather you just told us first, and we fixed it.

To make any of these requests, write to rights@editioncompass.com. We will answer within thirty days, and usually much sooner.

Where the data physically goes

GitHub, ImprovMX and Google are United States companies, so the request form and any email to us are handled in the United States. Rakuten is a Japanese company, so a click on a purchase link is handled in Japan. If you are in the UK, EEA or Switzerland, that means your information leaves your country when you use those parts of the site.

Children

This site is not aimed at children. It collects nothing automatically, and there is nothing for a child to sign up to.

Changes to this page

If we start doing something new with your information, this page changes first and the date at the top changes with it.

Getting in touch

There are two routes here, and they do different things.

For a guide request, a correction to a page, or anything about the books themselves, use the request form. It asks for nothing but the manga and your note — no name, no email, no account — and because of that we cannot write back. That is the trade, and for most messages it is the right one.

For anything about rights, write to rights@editioncompass.com. That covers a copyright or trademark question, a takedown request, a correction a publisher or author wants answered rather than quietly fixed, and any request about your own data under the sections above. A person reads that mailbox and you will get a reply.

If you write to that address, we have your email address, because that is how email works. We use it to answer you and for nothing else. It is not added to any list. Mail to an address at editioncompass.com is relayed by ImprovMX and delivered into a Gmail mailbox, as described above, and our reply will come from a gmail.com address rather than from editioncompass.com.
